Vitamin C as ascorbic acid has a pH of around 3, putting it in the highly acidic range. People taking large doses or those with sensitive stomachs may find this irritating to their systems. Calcium and magnesium are naturally alkalinizing minerals. They can be reacted with ascorbic acid to produce "buffered" forms with a pH in the neutral range. Nature's Way mineral ascorbate is "fully reacted" -- meaning that the minerals are bound to the ascorbate radical replacing the acidic hydrogen atom. Most "buffered" Vitamin C products are actually ascorbic acid with enough calcium carbonate added to raise the pH to a neutral range. Buffered ascorbic acid may be less irritating on the stomach but does not offer the same advantage in uptake that mineral ascorbates do. Each 1000 mg of ascorbate yields 80 mg of calcium and 60 mg of magnesium
One tablet provides: 500 mg (833% USRDA) of Vitamin C (ascorbate); 40 mg (4% USRDA) of Calcium (calcium ascorbate); and 20 mg (5% USRDA) of Magnesium (magnesium ascorbate). Also contains magnesium stearate.
